Week Three Pupdate

January 12th, 2024

Hi everyone! We’re in week three and the pups are doing wonderful….right on schedule with growth and development.

As expected, everyone has their eyes open this week (picture below) and they are starting to discover the world.  Growth continues to accelerate and all the pups are approximately 6X their birth weight.

Purple, a male, is the largest by far.  He was the first born pup and now weighs over 2 kilograms (about 4.5 lbs).  Yellow has put on some weight this week and is no longer one of the smallest in the litter.  Brown, a female, is now the peanut at 1500 grams.  She’s still very healthy and gaining weight daily, just not as fast as her brothers and sisters.

The other milestone from this week is a transition to puppy mush.  Everyone has teeth coming in now and Ginger is feeding less.  Puppy mush is their transition from 100% milk to more solid food.  By next week, they will be 100% mush which is the consistency of oatmeal.  Check out the video below…..it was the very first time they saw food from a source other than mom.

Last major update is all the pups are walking!  They have all found their feet and walking around the whelping box.  By next week, they will transition to a playpen with higher walls.  Some of them are already trying to escape.  We caught Orange attempting to climb out of the box this morning….he’s the mischievous one of the group and definitely likes to explore his surroundings.

Forgot to mention last week, that everyone got their first dose of Pyrantel.  That’s a de-wormer and helps to protect the pups from parasites.  Each pup gets a dose at 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks.

That’s it for week three, let us know if you have any questions!
